Choo…Choo…All aboard!!!!

Earlier, I posted a sneak peek from the 3rd Annual All Aboard for  a Cure.  This walk was held in Thrasher’s Park located in Norcross, Georgia. If you haven’t been to this park before, you have to come check it out. It’s a great park! My kids loved the playground and as a photographer, it has great places to take pictures.  And for those who have kids that love trains like my son, there’s a nearby railroad track that often has trains rolling by.  My son loved this!

I have to share that the night before the walk, thunderstorms began. Even my kids had woken up in the middle of the night (or early morning really) to the crashing thunder that rolled overhead.  The event was going to happen rain or shine so I was just hoping the rain would go away by morning.   Amazingly, though it was a rainy day, it didn’t stop hundreds of people from walking in downtown Norcross to help raise awareness and money for the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation. As you’ll see in the pictures, even under tents and umbrellas, there was a lot of excitement, joy and fun to be had and people’s hearts truly shined that day.

So here are a few more pics from that day…

Baskets of fun being raffled off that day.  I bought a few tickets to try my luck but as usual, I didn’t win. I don’t think I ever win these kinds of things.

These are some of the beautiful people that help to make this wonderful event happen.

This little man just stole my attention when I first saw him. He was such a cutie and I LOVED his shirt.

Beautiful family, right?

Lisa (pictured below) as a mom, is already super busy but how she is able to handle planning an event like this on top of it…well, let’s just say she’s simply amazing!

I had to take pictures of these siblings. They were SO CUTE!!! I took this after the walk officially started.  Here they were sitting near the Park’s entrance patiently waiting for the walkers to make their way back to the park.

Love the colors of these bags!

This is HBO Crew that were performing that day. You’ve gotta love it when you can ask someone if you can take their pics and they immediately know what to do.  Thanks for an awesome pose guys!

These were a group girls from the Gwinnett Ballet that were filing off stage after a fun performance for the crowd.

What kid doesn’t love face painting! Such a great activity for any event.

Here’s mito man again!

And this is one of my faves of faves because this little angel, with the help of her parents, got off her wheelchair and walked through to the finish line.

There were so many more pictures. Stay tuned…as I said before, i’ll be adding a gallery from the walk. Also, I just posted a short slide show for this event.

If you find yourself in one of these photos and would like a copy, you can simply email me at ayphotodesign@gmail.com and i’ll send you the jpeg file of the photo(s) for free.

All Aboard for a sneak peek…

So here’s a sneak peek from Saturday, April 24th, the 3rd Annual All Aboard for a Cure where hundreds of walkers united to support individuals and their families with mitochondrial disease.  I was fortunate enough to be asked by a good friend of mine to help photograph the event (Thanks Lorna!).  My friend’s daughter has mitochondrial disease (“mito” for short) and it is from her and her family that I’ve come to learn about what this disease is all about.  If you know biology, you know that the mitochondria is the body’s powerhouse…what basically creates more than 90% of the body’s energy it needs to live and grow.  Without it (mitocohondria), cells begin to die and a person’s life is compromised. Click here to read more about Mitochondrial disease.

I love taking pictures but days like this make what I do extra special.  I had such a great time taking photographs and just getting to meet some of the children and their families. Here are just a few from that day…

I can’t wait to share more pictures with you.

I will be adding a special gallery up for this event.  If you haven’t already, you can subscribe to my blog-site via RSS feeds or via email.

Contact ME

Max

I shared a sneak peek of Max last week.  Here’s Max and his mommy! They were so sweet to spend some time at Piedmont Park with me as one of my models.  A, thanks for always being open to letting me practice on you and your cutie patootie! Love you guys! Next time, we’ll have to try and get daddy in the picture too! =)

After the park, they hung out with me at my house and of course, I had to take more pictures.

The great thing about being home was I could take my time getting shots of  Max.

Here’s more …

Thanks for looking!

Family portraits and…what NOT to wear?!

I recently took family portraits with a friend photographer living in Athens, GA.  It was a lot of fun but i’ll have to say that preparing for the shoot was a bit stressful.  It took me a few weeks to pick what my whole family would be wearing.  I don’t know about you but I didn’t want to leave it totally up to my husband to decide what he’d wear that day let alone give me some advice as to what he thinks I or the kids should wear.  Not that he doesn’t dress well… but since we don’t often take family portraits, I wanted to make the most of this time we had.   It’s probably a good thing that he doesn’t have an opinion either way and leaves it up to me to decide.  I did ask him once to be sure to make him feel included…”What would you like to wear [to the shoot] honey?” and his response was “Whatever you’d like me to wear.” (My husband knows me so well?)

So after several days of  shopping for my outfit (it’s always hard for me to decide on an outfit though my kids can look cute in most anything), I finally decided on a spring color theme of yellow, blues and gray. Our clothes were a mix of new clothes and clothes that were already in our closet.  Of course, on the day of the shoot, my daughter decides she didn’t want to wear my suggested silver /gray shoes but wanted to wear pink sandals (definitely not in my color scheme…oh well).   And I didn’t even notice until I saw the pictures that my husband was wearing dark brown shoes (not exactly color coordinating with my theme here either).  So it (my planned color coordinating wardrobe) wasn’t perfect but it all worked out.  I think our family’s personality and dynamics totally came through this process and I loved the end result.

With my recent personal experience in being on the other end of the camera, I started thinking about how it may be a good idea to write about what you should wear in a photo shoot.

Although there’s no true, hard and fast rules as to what’s always right or wrong to wear…I think a better way to think about it is what not to wear!

1) Don’t wear anything you don’t feel comfortable wearing in the first place. You have to feel comfortable in order for your pictures to look good. If you don’t feel comfortable, you won’t look comfortable. So go with clothes that will make you feel good.

2) Don’t wear clothes that exactly match. We’ve all probably done this…everyone wear black tops and the khaki pants (or jeans). There’s nothing wrong with this but I think we need to be a bit more creative. Also, you’ll love the result of taking a little extra time to think about this and possibly working with your photographer for suggestions.   This doesn’t mean you can’t choose black, browns, jeans or the whites but mix it up a little. For example, here’s a great take on the khaki, black & white theme.

Here’s another example of coordinating but not exactly matching…

Does this look slightly familiar? Well, this set did visually jump start me on my color scheme.

3) Avoid patterns and logos that distract from the person in the photo. This includes TV characters on your kids’ clothing.  You don’t want the shirt or clothing to be the first thing noticed in pictures.

If you’re more casual, go casual. If you like to be a bit more dressed up, you can do that too.  Basically, keep it simple and keep it you!

Also, don’t forget about fun accessories like hats, cool shoes, boots, jackets, jewelry, scarves – you name it!

Stay tuned as i’ll be sharing weekly wardrobe suggestions to hopefully give you some ideas on your next shoot. =) So if you haven’t already, consider becoming an email subscriber or click on the RSS feed icon located at the top right side of the blog.

And just for fun…here’s a family portrait that’s just too cute… I had to share!

A family & friends giveaway winner…

After my session with the T family, I had a special giveaway for their family and friends. Anyone who posted a comment on the “Sweet T’s” post would be eligible to win ONE free on-location photography session with me, a DVD with 20-40 edited images from the photo session AND a print release so the lucky winner will be able to have prints made on their own.

There were a total of six comments from T’s friends and family.

I recruited my son (who was watching tv) to pick the winner. He willingly accepted the job and as you’ll see, he continued to do what he was doing.

And the …

winner is…

YAY!!! Elizabeth, you’re the winner!!!! Congratulations!!! I’ll be contacting you via email.

And to the other participants, i’ll be offering 60% off my photography session package.   Hope you’ll consider using me the next time you need someone to help document your life and love!

Sneak Peek of Max @ 3 months

My cousin has been patiently waiting for these pictures.  I had a few projects I have had to work on but i’m finally working on these photos for her.  I wanted to go ahead and share a few favorites i had so grandma, grandpa, aunts and uncles who live far away will get to look into those “make you melt inside and make you want to drop everything and come visit” kind of eyes.  Whenever I see him, I just want to squeeze him up!

Don’t you just love the photo below. It’s like he’s taking his own sneak peek into my camera! Love it!!!!
